How Paxil
Works
PaxilŽ
is a newer class of antidepressant medication known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors
(SSRIs). Anxiety disorders may be caused by an imbalance among chemical messengers in the brain.
One of these chemical messengers is serotonin. Serotonin helps send electrical signals from one nerve cell to another. In the process, serotonin is released from one nerve cell (the sender) and travels to the next (the receiver), where it is either absorbed or returns back to the original sender cell. When a person suffers from social anxiety disorder, there may be a problem with the balance of the serotonin system that affects the cell to cell communication.
PaxilŽ blocks serotonin from being reabsorbed back into the sender nerve cell. This process increases the amount of serotonin available to be absorbed by the next cell and may help message transmission return to normal.

Is there a special time of day to take
PaxilŽ?
PaxilŽ may be taken once a day, either in the morning or evening. Your doctor or pharmacist can make suggestions about which time of day is best for you. You may find it most convenient to take
PaxilŽ with breakfast, but you can take it anytime.
How long will I have to take
PaxilŽ?
Your length of therapy with PaxilŽ will be based on your own personal needs as a patient. It's important to continue taking your medication for as long as your doctor advises, even if you're feeling better.
Is PaxilŽ addictive?
PaxilŽ has been studied both in the short- and long-term use and is not associated with dependence or addiction. The class of drugs called benzodiazepines (which are used to treat certain anxiety disorders) has been associated with physical dependence in some patients.
PaxilŽ does not belong to this class of drugs.
Does PaxilŽ cause side effects?
PaxilŽ is generally well tolerated. As with many medications, there can be side effects.
Side effects could include decreased appetite, dry mouth, sweating, nausea, constipation,
sexual side effects in men and women, yawn, tremor or sleepiness. Most people who experience
side effects are not bothered enough to stop taking PaxilŽ.

Is it safe to take PaxilŽ with other medications?
It's very important for you to TELL YOUR DOCTOR ABOUT ANY PRESCRIPTION, OR OVER-THE-COUNTER OR HERBAL MEDICATION YOU ARE TAKING. In many cases you can take
PaxilŽ with your other medications. However, a few medications, when taken with
PaxilŽ, may increase the chance of side effects from PaxilŽ or the other drug. One example of a medication that should not be taken at the same time as, or within 2 weeks of, taking
PaxilŽ is a class of drugs called monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs).
How much PaxilŽ will I need to take?
The amount of PaxilŽ a patient may need varies with each individual and the condition being treated. The usual starting dose is 10 to 20 mg. Your doctor may raise the dose gradually if increases are needed.
What is my role in therapy?
Communicate:
Your doctor is relying on you to communicate any symptoms you are experiencing. It may be difficult at first to talk about your symptoms, but it's the only way your doctor can decide on the most beneficial treatment.
Follow through with your treatment:
It is very important that you follow your doctor's instructions about your treatment. You should not discontinue
PaxilŽ unless your doctor tells you it's okay to do so. Don't get discouraged if your symptoms don't improve right away; it may be several weeks before you start to feel better.
